Children of the ’80s hold certain movies sacred. There’s “Ghostbusters,” “Splash,” “16 Candles,” and “Footloose,” just to name a few. But, one film that really has had a passionate cult following is the 1987 classic “Dirty Dancing.” This film has had such a cultural impact that every year, hundreds, if not thousands of couples, take to dance studios to learn the movie’s final dance scene. The film featured the legendary Patrick Swayzee and Jennifer Grey, whose intense on-screen chemistry set a new standard for what producers want from their actors. Ironically, there are reports that claim that one of Hollywood’s steamiest on-screen couples actually could not stand each other.
It appears that their first time working together in the 1984 film “Red Dawn,” didn’t leave a very good impression for either actor. If this is true, then the fact they could channel their distaste into a totally believable and super hot on-screen romance speaks to their incredible pedigrees as actors! There are many actors working today who simply can not pull that off. And would you believe that studio executives almost sent this movie straight to the DVD (VHS) section? It turns out that they had no faith that the movie would perform well at the box office due to some very unkind critic reviews.
But, once folks saw it on opening weekend, and word of mouth got around, the movie quickly became the season’s biggest sleeper hit, and soon Patrick Swayzee became one of the biggest sex symbols of the ’80s! Sadly, Patrick Swayzee left us in 2009, but his legend will live on forever thanks to movies like “Dirty Dancing.”
