The water was still in the Yakutia Republic. Igor Vorozhbitsyn was 42 years old, and he just wanted to fish. The Russian wild is quiet until it is not.
And then the world broke. A massive brown bear lunged from the brush. It did not growl. It just acted. Igor felt the weight of the predator on his spine. The claws began their work. They tore into his face. They shredded the fabric of his clothes and reached for his chest.

He was pinned under pure muscle.
So Igor braced for the end. He was alone in a place where nature does not offer any mercy. The bear was on top of him, and it was winning.
But then his pocket started to scream. It was a high-pitched sound. It was the last thing anyone expected to hear in the deep woods of northern Russia.

The beast froze.
Igor felt the pressure lift for a split second. His phone was ringing. It was a song that millions of people around the world know by heart.
It was the 2010 hit Baby by Justin Bieber. The upbeat pop rhythm sliced through the sounds of the struggle. It was loud and it was incredibly jarring.
The melody defied the laws of the forest.
The bear did not know how to react to the teenage pop star. It was a sharp shock. The animal turned and bolted back into the dark tree line. It was a moment Igor never could have expected.
Igor lay in the dirt. He was bleeding from his face and his chest. But he was breathing. The silence returned to the Yakutia Republic just as fast.
He managed to reach his feet and he called for help. Thankfully, he found other fishermen nearby. They could not believe he was standing there to tell the story.

The ringtone was never meant to be a weapon.
Igor explained later that the song was a prank. He said, I know that sort of ringtone isn’t to everyone’s taste but my granddaughter loaded it onto my phone for a joke.
That joke was the only reason he was alive. Experts say that sudden sounds can stop an angry bear because the noise is so unexpected and strange. Bells have worked for hikers for decades.

But a pop anthem was a new kind of deterrent. It signaled a human presence that the bear could not understand.
The claws left their mark.
Igor suffered deep cuts and bruises across his body but he went to the hospital instead of a grave. In Russia, about eight people die every year from bears but Igor was not one of them.
He walked away because of a digital file and a girl who wanted to tease her grandfather about his music.
The song saved a man who was seconds away from being a statistic.
