Genetic science made it possible for both men to contribute sperm during the IVF attempt. The goal was to give both fathers an equal chance at a biological tie with the children.
In double donor IVF, two separate eggs are fertilized by two distinct paternal sperm contributions. This creates fraternal twins who are technically half siblings genetically.

Burtka explained, “We inserted one of my sp*rm and one of David’s sp*rm into two eggs with the hope that they would both take, just because we both wanted to be dads biologically. Both took, miraculously.”
Burtka added, “Maybe in the beginning it was a little rough because, you know, [Neil] lost his drinking buddy, so it was a little difficult. But after time tells, it’s great.”
He joked, “In fact, I love a lunchtime where I can push alcohol on him so we can go shopping afterwards. He’s more inclined to buy me things. So I’m like ‘You should have another glass, your second glass of wine!'”
DNA tests never mattered when it came to raising their newborn twins.
Harris emphasized that biological details never bothered him. He said, “We are their parents and I love them implicitly.” They focused purely on giving both twins an equal home.
Fraternal twins share about fifty percent of their DNA on average, just like any standard siblings. Yet environment and shared mannerisms often make them mirror both parents over time.
