Last month, something unusual happened in Vatican City. St Peter’s Square, a place normally tied to religious ceremonies, hosted its first live music concert on September 13. And during the show, Andrea Bocelli walked on stage beside American singer Teddy Swims to sing “Amazing Grace,” a moment people quickly shared everywhere online.
The performance spread fast across the internet, collecting more than 800,000 views through several YouTube uploads. Viewers seemed drawn to the strange mix of location and music, a massive religious square turned concert venue, where two very different voices met during a quiet, emotional hymn.

Andrea opened the performance first, steady and confident, backed by a full orchestra filling the square with sound. Above the crowd, drones slowly moved through the dark sky, arranging themselves into an image of the late Pope Francis, who had passed away earlier in April 2023.
Then Teddy Swims stepped into the second verse, his deep voice bringing something different into the song. His style leaned more toward gospel and blues, yet he approached the moment carefully, keeping the tone respectful for the setting while still adding his own sound.
As the drones shifted again, shaping pictures of doves gliding across the sky, both singers blended their voices together. Still, Bocelli’s powerful vibrato carried across the square so strongly that Teddy eased back slightly, staying behind him and softly harmonizing during the closing lines.

The concert itself carried the title Grace For The World, and Bocelli did more than perform. He helped direct the event alongside Pharrell Williams, the outspoken Christian musician best known for the song “Happy,” who worked with organizers to shape the large international program.
Several well known artists also appeared throughout the night. Performers included John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, Jelly Roll, Karol G from Colombia, Thai rapper BamBam, and singer Angélique Kidjo, whose career connects both Benin and France.
The concert closed out the Fratelli Tutti Foundation’s 2025 World Meeting on Human Fraternity. According to the group’s president, Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, the goal was “to communicate to the whole world, with a symbolic embrace, the joy of fraternal love.”
Bocelli later reflected on the night and called the opportunity “a great honour.” He added, “I sincerely hope that it will truly succeed in spreading, in everyone’s hearts, a sense of brotherhood and great humanity, which is so badly needed.”
Speaking in a separate interview about faith, Bocelli explained why his beliefs remain strong. He said, “I do not believe in the clock without the clockmaker. I do not believe that one can make something without someone who designed it being made. Therefore, I have faith, I have a lot of faith in the one who made the world.”
