When it comes to Latin Pop, there’s one man who many credits for its huge popularity in today’s American music marketplace — Ricky Martin. Much like Ritchie Valen’s La Bamba, Ricky Martin’s iconic Latin dance anthem titled “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” has become a permanent part of American pop culture. What’s so great about the song was that it wasn’t just a catchy tune, it represented entire philosophy, a lifestyle that encouraged folks to find what drives their passion and go for it. I think this is why it resonated so deeply because the lyrics represented a message people love to hear, which is to get out and enjoy life —live in the moment.
“Livin’ La Vida Loca” was released on Martin’s 1999 self-titled album and received numerous Grammy Award nominations and made turned Martin into an international superstar. VH1 listed it at #28 on its list of the Greatest songs of the ’90s. And it’s hard to argue with their assessment; I can still remember hearing this song everywhere with co-workers singing and dancing to it all the time at work. In the music video, Martin matches the same energy and passion you feel in the song, as he showed that he’s also a fantastic dancer. In this video from 2018, Martain shows that he’s still got all the best moves as he performs to Kenny Loggins’ classic song “Footloose,” which was featured in the iconic ’80s movie, with the same title, starring Kevin Bacon.
