There were some very unique songs that came out of the 80s and I’m sure that you can sing one or more of them if you really thought about it. You don’t even have to be a child of the 80s to recognize the music and even the new generation that wasn’t around in the 80s can often sing those songs word for word. Although we may have a favorite from that time, regardless of whether it is by Cyndi Lauper, Prince or any other artist, they all have something interesting that they bring to the table. That includes a very special song that came out in 1985, Money for Nothing.
The music group Dire Straits had been around for quite some time and they were already famous for one of their songs, ‘Sultans of Swing’. When they came out with the new album in the summer of 1985, however, it had a song that would be even more famous than the original. The song was ‘Money for Nothing’ and it was not only great to hear on the radio, it was a lot of fun to see in concert as well. That is what you get to see in the following video, which is from the Live Aid concert in 1985. It is being performed along with Sting, who also sang the famous line in the original song.
The concert took place in Wembley Stadium, London on July 13, 1985. Almost 72,000 people were in attendance that day to hear all of the singers, who were performing to raise money for the Ethiopian famine disaster. It was not only the thousands of people who were actually at the stadium, but it was also many others who were watching the broadcast from around the world. It was really quite a feat for that time.
You never know when a song is going to make it as popular as this tune. It’s always interesting to see how those songs develop and evolve as they continue to gain popularity. Although we will never hear another song quite like this again, we will continue to enjoy it as often as we hear it. You can watch the Live Aid performance in the following video:
