I was working in a movie theater in 1997 when James Cameron’s blockbuster hit Titanic came out. At the time, I had never seen a movie theater filled with so many people. The sea of humanity was dizzying, and cleanup between shows was certainly no picnic. However, the day before, we all had a chance to screen the movie, and as soon 3 hour and 30-minute epic were over, we all knew that it was going to be one the biggest hits in history. One of the elements of the movie that made it such an amazing film, aside from Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslett’s Oscar-worthy performances, was the soundtrack.
In 1999, a song on the soundtrack titled “My Heart Will Go On,” sang by Celine Dion, Song of the Year, and Best Song Written for a Motion Picture or for Television. The soundtrack itself won Record of the Year, and Dion would be awarded a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Lyricist Will Jennings wrote the song’s lyrics, which were “from the point of view of a person of a great age looking back so many years.” The song captured the heartbreaking ending of the film perfectly and, to this date, is considered one of Dion’s signature songs. In this video, we see Dion performing “My Heart Will Go On,” live at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards.”
I just love the beautiful set design, which looks like a crystal jellyfish, with Dion standing in the center wearing an incredible white dress that gives her an angelic appearance to match her heavenly voice. There are simply no other artists who can come close to duplicating her magical presence.
