10-year-old Roberta Battaglia from Toronto, Canada is a tiny little lady, but she has a voice that is 10 feet tall. Roberta says that she started singing when she was three and a half years old. Her dad worked at a radio station, and would often take his little girl to work with him. Roberta’s mom says that her little girl just has a talent for singing in front of people. According to Roberta and her mom, all of Roberta’s talent comes from her dad. Her mom works for an airline and is very supportive of her little girl. During her dad’s gigs, he would give Roberta the microphone and let her sing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.”
Roberta had one very humble goal for what she’d do with the money if she wins: give her dog, whose name is Happy, a “little girlfriend.” Simon Cowell said that “Happy” is a great name. The song Roberta chose to sing was Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s “Shallow,” a song that the singer and the actor sang together for the movie they starred in, “A Star Is Born.” To say that Roberta’s performance was a powerhouse performance is an understatement. When she was finished singing, Roberta got a standing ovation from the judges, all of them. As the little girl stood and cried onstage, the judges lavished her with praise, describing her talent, her age, and “the moment” as unbelievable.
As she was crying, she explained to the judges that she gets bullied a lot. In response to that, Simon had some sound advice for her. He said that there’s one way to win over bullies: to be happy and successful. He added that bullies are jealous of talented people, so in that respect, being bullied is actually an honor. But then something crazy and unexpected happened. Judge Sophia Vergara said, “You’re 10 years old. It’s impossible to sing like that when you’re 10 years old.” Then she added the clincher: “Let’s see who’s going to bully you after this.” At that point, Sophia did what no one was expecting. She pushed the Golden Buzzer.
