We all make mistakes that we end up regretting but sometimes, they are so huge that they become newsworthy. That is what happened when one woman from Bay County, Florida, made a big blunder.
The 41-year-old woman was looking for some drugs on New Year’s Eve, so she thought she would text a drug dealer to set up an exchange. Little did she know, however, that she was actually texting the Sheriff’s office and she was totally busted.
Essentially, the woman placed an order for fentanyl to a police officer rather than a drug dealer. She was then caught red-handed buying drugs while also driving a car that was littered with paraphernalia and driving on a suspended license.
The Bay County Sheriff’s Office reports that Octavia Wells accidentally sent the text messages to a narcotics investigator. He then began ‘immediately communicating’ with her and remaining undercover.
Wells was all in on it and had no idea she was actually communicating with the police officer when he set up the sale and then went to meet her at a gas station in Panama City. When she arrived, several officers from the Sheriff’s office special investigations division greeted her and arrested her on the spot.
The affidavit of her arrest states that the investigator received those unsolicited messages and Wells used certain language that the cop was able to recognize from ‘training and experience to be common in attempting to purchase narcotics.’
According to the message, she needed ‘just a couple points’, which is drug language for 1/10 of a gram of fentanyl. She was planning on purchasing the drugs for $45.
As she was being arrested, the officers determined that she was driving with a suspended license and they asked her why she was at the gas station. When they searched her car, they found a ‘foil’, which is used for taking the drug. They also found a bag with fentanyl residue. Some burnt foil in a trash bag was found in the passenger seat along with digital scales, test strips, and cut straws used to smoke the drug.
Wells was sitting in the back of the patrol car when the officers spotted another cut straw and pieces of tinfoil sticking out of her pocket. After testing the materials, they found that they were all positive for the narcotic.
She spoke to the officers and said that she was trying to purchase a small amount of the drug before checking into rehab. She also said that she made the mistake of texting the police officer after his number was saved under his initials from a previous conversation. Those initials were similar to her drug dealer.
Wells was charged with unlawful use of a two-way communication device, driving with a suspended license, and possession of drug paraphernalia. She posted a bond and was ordered not to possess or consume alcoholic drinks.
In addition, she will have to submit random urinalysis tests and will appear back in court for sentencing.
