We have heard a lot of interesting debates about gender in the past decade or so. This includes many who have been in favor of, not only considering multiple gender possibilities but they also consider themselves to be transgender as well.
Hunter Schafer is one of those individuals, and she is well known because of her part in the show, Euphoria. In addition, Hunter is a transgender activist and she has something interesting to say in light of the executive order given by Donald Trump.
Recently, 26-year-old Hunter Schafer went on TikTok to reveal what she called a ‘harsh reality check’. She received her updated passport and now, it has the large gender marker of the letter ‘M’, even though she said that she was female on her application.
She said: “I was shocked, I just didn’t think it was actually going to happen.”
When Pres. Donald Trump was newly in office for his second term, he signed an executive order that only recognized two sexes, male and female. They would be assigned either male or female based on the sex assigned to them at birth.
The order reads: “It is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female. These sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality.”
As a result of the order, Americans would not be able to self-identify their genders on any government documents, including passports. If there was an application that requested a marker different than what was recorded at birth, it would be frozen.
Schafer was filming overseas when she lost her previous passport so she applied for a replacement. She marked her gender as female but when she was in Los Angeles and picked up the passport, she saw that officials had changed the gender marker to male.
She said: “I wanna acknowledge my privilege as a celebrity trans woman who is white and thin and can adhere to contemporary beauty standards — and it still happened.”
She then went on to say: “It’s been nearly a decade since I changed my gender marker. This has led me to believe that the agencies in charge of passports are now required to cross-reference birth certificates.”
Schafer had a difficult time believing that Trump would actually go through with it, saying that she would believe it when she saw it. Now that she was holding her new passport, however, she was a believer.
She also had her own thoughts, saying: “I don’t give a f*** that they put an M on my passport. It doesn’t change really anything about me or my transness. However, it does make life a little harder.”
I think that this is probably one of many reports we are going to hear in the coming months and years.
