This Church Is Getting Tons of Attention for Its Sassy Church Signs

Here in the United States, a lot of people run when they see the “church folks” coming because people who regularly attend church have a reputation (sometimes deserved, sometimes not) of being stuffy and strict. A lot of people also wrongly assume that people who attend church don’t have a good sense of humor. The fact is, groups of churchgoers are like any other group. There are some people who have a sense of humor and some who don’t. One way you can tell a lot about a church is by their church signs. Traditionally, church signs are pretty simple.

Usually, you can expect a church sign to announce the name of the church’s pastor, the times for church services and Sunday school, and the occasional special announcement. You’ll usually also see some sort of contact information, probably a phone number, and in modern times, perhaps a website. However, a church in Wantagh, New York has become internet famous for using its church signs to make some points. Sometimes they’re funny and make us laugh at ourselves, and in some cases, the signs deliver a pretty powerful statement. Pastor Ron Garner says that there’s a specific point to his sassy church signs.

Pastor Garner told Bored Panda that his church, the Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church, is located on a busy street and he thinks having a good message on the church’s outdoor sign is a good opportunity to convey the church’s message to people passing by. In fact, he said that in his opinion, Christianity doesn’t have to be “staid,” and I agree with him. Not everyone wants a harsh and unbending church experience, and if we can’t laugh at ourselves now and then, what’s the point of life?

However, Pastor Garner also wants people to understand his church’s position on some important social justice issues. He says that there are people in the community who come to the church because of what they read in the sign outside while passing by.  Here’s a good example of one of their funnier signs.
