Millie and Marcia Biggs were like many twins when they were born. Although they are not identical twins, they looked a lot alike. If you were to see them today, however, you may question if they are actually twins at all. It all started when Michael and Amanda Biggs found out that they were getting ready to welcome a set of twins into the world. It was 2016 and the parents were looking forward to a life full of excitement and love with their enlarged family. Of course, ask anybody who has twins and they will tell you that there are always going to be some differences in personalities. As they got older, however, they began to notice that something else was different, and that was the color of their skin.
It started when the tops of Billy’s ears and fingers started to darken. It wasn’t long before the skin tone changed on her entire body. The parents were thinking that eventually, Macia’s skin would do something similar but it actually ended up turning lighter over time. The family lives in Birmingham, UK, and that area has a long history of racial tensions. It was such a rare skin condition that the parents would have to learn about it over time. They knew that they were both their children but this skin condition is one that only happens once in every 1 million twin births. It is known as atavism, and it occurred because of the genetic makeup of the parents. The couple also learned that there were no negative health consequences associated with it.

Since they had different skin tones, people began to talk, as people often do. Amanda remembers pushing both of the sisters as she was walking around the neighborhood and people started saying that they doubted they were actually sisters. When you look at them, it does appear as if they are different races but they are actually twin sisters. The rude comment was more of an unusual thing, but it did happen on occasion.

After the twins started attending school, they drew some additional attention from the other students. Some kids thought that they were only friends but when they learned that they were sisters, they found it confusing.

The two sisters still are best of friends and they do almost everything together. They love dancing and singing but they do have their own personal style. Millie is more of a girly girl and Marcia is somewhat of a tomboy.

The twins say that they have not had to deal with racism but the father said that he has experienced it in his lifetime. He loves the fact that his twins are doing well.

After the twins turned 11, they decided to speak out against racism by using their genetic differences. They appeared on a campaign that broke down race on a very personal basis. The girls are now teenagers and they attend the same school. Eventually, they will go to different cities when they go to university.

It really doesn’t matter where they go in life, they will always be sisters. We hope the best for both of them. You can watch more on these sisters in the following National Geographic special:
