There is something that all of us are able to do from the time we are very young. You can see children doing it from the moment that they are able to stand and sometimes, even before they can stand on their own. All you have to do is put some music on and before you know it, the child is moving to the rhythm of the music. Nobody needs to teach them how to dance, it is something that is built into them. Some students take that knowledge and ability to higher levels but others simply enjoy it privately when they can.
Not every dance we see is going to be the same. There are some that are impressive and may take years to master but others can be learned in a matter of a few minutes or a couple of hours. Although the type of dance may be different from one person to another, there is something that is very similar. It’s the fact that it takes a lot of coordination and strength to keep up the dance. That is clearly seen in these teens who are doing what is known as a coordination dance.
Colored rings are placed on the floor with one particular color in each row. Although the dancers don’t have to be coordinated by gender, they are in this case with boys on one side and girls on the other. There are also 2 small sticks that are held by each dancer.
This is where the fun begins. The music starts and they start tapping the sticks together to the rhythm. Their bodies then begin to respond in an amazing way.
The dancers start jumping into the rings, one at a time. They have identical dance moves and stay in their own color.
As the dancer jumps to the new row of colored rings, another student joins in two rows behind them.
The first two students eventually exit the rings and two others join in. When the person exits the rings, they go to the back of the line.
It may seem as if there is no rhyme or reason to this dance but it is actually coordinated. That is how they are able to get through the line without bumping into each other in the process. No dancer will enter the rings until it is their time to do so.
It also looks as if the rings are fixed to the floor because they don’t move.
We also see a teacher in a different type of coordination dance. It is done with younger students.
They aren’t dancing through colored rings but they are dancing through squares. The teacher stands at the front of the line and leads the student through the squares. When the teacher leaves the line, the student is then the leader.
Coordination dance is not taught everywhere but when it is taught somewhere, it begins at a young age. There are two circles at the start.
The students face each other and clap their hands while learning to jump in and out of the circles. It gets them ready for the extra coordination when more rings are added.
The simple approach allows children to get used to holding items and moving to the rhythm. The teacher starts with some simple dance moves and then they learn to synchronize their motions for the routine.
It appears as if Spanish schools are teaching this type of dance but it would be of benefit anywhere.
