Steel Magnolias Is Back In The Theaters For 30th Anniversary

Did you ever notice how there are certain movies that just seem to reach an iconic phase very quickly? We may watch them multiple times at the theater and then we continue to watch them, over and over again. In some cases, we may have watched them 100 times or more and there are not very many movies that fall into that category. For many, however, Steel Magnolias is just one of those movies.

It’s hard to believe that it has been three decades since Shelby, M’Lynn, Truvy, Annelle, Clairee, and Ouiser appeared in this iconic movie. I can’t tell you how many times people have cried over this movie, both at the theaters and at home. If you loved seeing that at the theater 30 years ago, we have some good news for you. In order to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the movie, it is returning to the theaters once again.

Fathom Events and Turner Classic Movies (TCM) are working together so that the 30th anniversary of the movie can be marked in an awesome way. For only three days, the movie is returning to the theaters so you better hurry up and get your friends together. The classic movie is being re-released to the big screen along with Gone with the Wind, To Kill a Mockingbird, the Wizard Of Oz, Ben Hur and much more.

Tom Lucas is the Vice President of Studio Relations of Fathom Events and he said: “Every year, more and more film fans have flocked to the TCM Big Screen Classics series, proving the lasting appeal of these movies and the thrill of seeing them in a movie theater. From spectacular musicals and grand Westerns to epic adventures, we are tremendously proud of this year’s lineup and our continuing partnership with TCM.”

The movie was released in1989 and it received many positive reviews. Roger Ebert was one who reviewed the film as: “willing to sacrifice its over-all impact for individual moments of humor, and while that leaves us without much to take home, you’ve got to hand it to them: The moments work.”

When the film opened, it had a first weekend of $5,425,440. The numbers continued to grow until it grossed well over $83 million. It was on the top of the heap for 16 weeks. Worldwide, it earned $95,904,091.

The women from a small town southern community are followed in this movie. Three of the women are learning how to cope with the death of the daughter of one of the other women. Sally Field is featured in the movie, along with Dolly Parton, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, and Daryl Hannah. Most people remember MacLaine and her one-liners.

Julia Roberts played the character of Shelby. It is adapted from a screenplay from 1987 written by Robert Hartley. Hartley was said to have written the play in order to cope with the death of his sister.

In 1985, his sister passed away from complications associated with type I diabetes. He decided to change the name of his sister from Susan to Shelby. Steel Magnolias is associated with the main female characters being delicate like flowers and tough as steel.

You can see the movie at either 4 pm or 7 pm on Sunday, May 19, 2019; 7 pm on Tuesday, May 21, 2019; or 7 pm on Wednesday, May 22, 2019. Tickets can also be purchased on the Fathom Events website.
