It seems as if the world is constantly debating something and any time you start a conversation, you must be prepared for a rebuttal. The fitness chain, Planet Fitness has gotten involved in one of the latest heated debates, and it all started with a viral video.
It happened in Alaska when a woman was in the locker room at the Fairbank location of Planet Fitness. She took a picture of a trans woman shaving at the sink and the women’s locker room and accused the company of allowing men to enter the space that was exclusive to cisgender women.
In the original picture, you can see a transgender woman shaving at a locker room sink. The woman who took the viral photo went on a rant in a video about being upset over the situation.
After the video went viral, it sparked a debate that is still going on today. In a surprising turn of events, her membership was revoked from Planet Fitness but the transgender person in the photo was not approached.
Planet Fitness also stood by its decision staunchly, saying that the policy allows people with various gender identities to use the locker room of their choice. They also said that people were not able to act in bad faith or they could lose their gym membership.
The same trans person has now been photographed again and those pictures continue to circulate. Many people who are on the conservative side are appealing to others to cancel their membership to the fitness outlet.
This had such an impact on the company that their stock prices took a hit. The stocks dropped from $66 down to $56 in only 12 days. It is also thought that the company’s market cap fell from $5.3 billion to about $4.9 billion.
The debate continues to rage online and it will be interesting to see where it eventually lands.
