Psychologist Warns That Relaxing With ‘True Crime’ Dramas Is A Huge Red Flag

Most people like to relax and watch some TV in the evening. They might even binge-watch shows, and that is becoming increasingly popular.

There are also some considerations as to the type of shows that you enjoy watching. For example, some of the true crime stories that have found their way on streaming platforms, such as Netflix, really pull us into the lives and minds of these nefarious criminals.

The shows themselves sometimes do quite well and you might find yourself even feeling a little sorry for the individual who committed such crimes. On the other hand, watching those shows could also make you realize that there are people walking around out there who really should not be in the general public.

According to one psychiatrist, Dr. Thelma Bryant, however, there may be a problem with those who enjoy watching such a show. If you find yourself in that category, you may want to take a closer look at why you enjoy them.

It occurred when the psychiatrist was on the Mel Robbins podcast to discuss trauma associated with binge-watching true crime. Dr. Brian said: “If your idea of relaxing before you go to sleep is to watch three episodes of ‘Law and Order,’ [then] I would encourage you to think about ‘why is trauma relaxing to me?'”

She continued, saying: “That’s what it is. Harm, crime, violation, attacks, and that’s what is going to soothe me into my bedtime.”

After going further into the subject, Dr. Bryant was asked about her experience with those who consume this type of content regularly. That Dr. said that many of those individuals find the shows ‘normal and familiar’.

She explains: “Some of us grew up in high-stress [situations], so people mistake peace for boring. And it’s like, to come home to yourself you have to lean into the discomfort because it’s gonna feel unfamiliar completely”
