There seems to have been many movies in recent years that are not necessarily original, but we love them just as much. I’m talking about movie remakes and it doesn’t matter who is doing it, it seems as if they are interested in making them a success. Some of the best movies that have been made are now being remade for nostalgic reasons and the box office is full of one of those remakes after another. One of the latest to hit the silver screen is a remake based on Pippi Longstocking.
If you have a few decades behind you, you probably remember the Swedish redhead Pippi Longstocking who is the main character from children’s books written by Astrid Lindgren. The author’s daughter, Pippi, asked her mother for a get well story after school and the series was born. Lindgren had submitted the book to be published but was rejected in 1944. It was eventually accepted the next year by Rabén and Sjögren and the first three books came out from 1945-1948. Pippi Longstocking is “the strongest and kindest and jolliest and richest girl in the whole world.”
After the three short stories, a picture book came out. The series has been translated into 76 languages as of 2018 and the stories were an instant hit when they were put on the big screen or on television.
The newest news is that the adventures of Pippi Longstocking will be back in the movie theater again. StudioCanal and producer David Heyman are responsible for the production of the movie in collaboration with the Astrid Lindgren Company. That family entity manages all of the author’s work.
Astrid Lindgren Film CEO, Nils Nyman said, “In David Heyman … together with StudioCanal, we are confident that we have found a team that can understand and appreciate the full value of Pippi Longstocking and develops films that capture both the playfulness and the gravity in my grandmother’s works.”
Incidentally, Heyman is responsible for producing the Harry Potter films through Heyday Films company. He is also the producer behind Paddington and Fantastic Beasts. One of his newest works is a remake of ‘The Secret Garden’, which is also a children’s classic.
Obviously, Heyman has a love for children’s books so Pippi Longstocking is sure to be a winner.
In a statement, Heyman said, “Pippi has endured and inspired families everywhere through her life force, the strength of character and her irrepressible joie de vivre. Astrid Lindgren’s books have been translated around the globe for many years – a testament to her vision which we are determined to honor with a new film.”
The 50 Longstocking character will always be resilient. Her father is a buccaneer Capt. and she tells stories about her father and what he did. The redheaded freckled girl is unconventional and she also has a lot of strength behind her. She is even able to lift a horse with a single hand and her wild braids and leggings made her famous.
There are no grown-ups who live with Pippi but she always has company, including her pet monkey and horse. Two human friends, Tommy and Annika are also with her and she is loads of fun to watch through the entire movie.
Pippi Longstocking hasn’t been on the big screen for many years but now that some time has passed, it’s time for a reboot. The deal was just announced and it may be in its early stages but we are already getting excited.
