Petition Mocking Trump Greenland Purchase Passes 250,000 Signatures

A satirical petition has gained attention after calling on Denmark to buy the US state of California from Donald Trump. The joke campaign comes after Trump repeatedly floated the idea of the United States acquiring Greenland from Denmark.

The petition, hosted on Denmarkification.com, has now passed 250,000 signatures. Many supporters appear to be enjoying the humor rather than pushing a serious political message.

The campaign imagines Denmark purchasing California and renaming it “New Denmark.” It also jokes about changing Disneyland into “Hans Christian Andersenland,” leaning heavily into parody.

The petition uses language meant to mirror Trump’s past statements. It argues Denmark should “play the U.S. at its own game” and claims the country needs “more sunshine, palm trees and roller skates.”

While the petition is meant as satire, Trump has been serious about Greenland. He has repeatedly warned about the island’s strategic importance and said the US needs it to counter Russian influence.

Trump has also issued threats over Greenland, saying he would take action “whether they like it or not.” Those remarks have drawn backlash in the region.

On Saturday, thousands of Greenlanders marched through the capital city of Nuuk. The demonstrations were held in protest against what they see as escalating threats from the Trump administration.

In response to opposition, Trump has threatened to impose new tariffs. These would start at 10 percent on February 1 and rise to 25 percent on June 1.

The tariffs would apply to countries that oppose Washington’s bid to control Greenland. The UK was mentioned among those that could be affected.
