In many homes, there is a need for space. We all have plenty of things but often, we don’t have the area to keep them all in an organized manner.
In the past, there was always a lot of emphasis on organization and waste was not something that was even considered. This was sometimes seen in the strangest ways, including the little cupboard above your refrigerator.
If you were to ask your mother or grandmother about this often unused cupboard, they would tell you that it is the perfect place to store certain items. When you first look at it, it might look like wasted space but when you consider the possibilities, they are truly endless.
Storage Space for Kitchen Gadgets:
If you are somebody who loves kitchen gadgets, and I think we all do, you already realize that some are used frequently and others, not so much. Finding a place to store the ones that are not used often is sometimes difficult to do.
Although you would not want to climb up and get into the cupboards above the refrigerator a few times per day, if you have something that only comes out on occasion, it’s the perfect place to keep it.
Some examples of items that may be kept above the refrigerator include waffle makers, food processors, and warming plates.
Canned and Baking Goods:
If you look at the date on most canned goods, you will see that they last a very long time. It’s a good idea to store them so that you have something to eat when times get tough.
Of course, not all canned goods should be kept above the refrigerator but if you are stockpiling something for a rainy day, it’s a good idea to use the space this way. It’s also good to stockpile baking essentials that you may only use weekly.
Cookbooks:
If you still use printable cookbooks, then storing them above the refrigerator is a great idea. You wouldn’t want to store them if you use them every day but keeping the books rather than giving them a toss in the bin is a good idea.
Pantry Items:
Aside from the canned goods that you may want to keep above the refrigerator, there may be other pantry items that fit nicely in this space. The key is to store items that are not accessed on a regular basis.
Household Items:
You could always keep some kitchen towels or other household items above the refrigerator. As long as you don’t need them every day, storing them out of sight is a good idea.
Fine China:
You can store some of your best plates and cutlery that are only used on special occasions. Keeping them above the fridge is a great idea but you better be careful when you’re getting them down.
Finally, we would like to give you some advice about being cautious when you open and close the cupboards. If you put heavy items up in there, make sure that you can get them down safely.
Never stand on a chair when storing any items in the cupboards above the refrigerator. Use a stepladder or a sturdy stool and remember that it only takes a moment for disaster to strike.
