Netflix Users Could Face $1,300 Fine For Watching New Show

Netflix users have been warned that they could be fined $1,300 for watching a certain show. It all comes down to a rule in the UK about having a valid TV licence when watching live programming.

Netflix has always been known for its all-inclusive membership. Unlike Amazon Prime, where some shows cost extra, Netflix gives access to everything for one price. But now that it’s started showing live events, things have changed for UK viewers.

In recent years, Netflix has added live events like boxing, WWE wrestling, and NFL games. The problem is that these broadcasts count as live TV, which means a licence is required in the UK to watch them legally.

According to the TV licensing website, a licence covers all live channels like BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and Sky. It also includes any live streams on services like YouTube, Netflix, or Amazon Prime Video. Watching non-live shows on Netflix is fine without one, but live events are treated differently.

The WWE is hosting live fights on Netflix tonight, and that means anyone in the UK who tunes in without a licence could face a serious fine. The penalty can reach $1,300, which equals about £966.

Netflix’s own site says: “Live events are included on all Netflix plans, allowing you to watch what everyone is talking about the moment it happens! Enjoy sports, comedy stand-ups, award shows, and other special events that stream live on Netflix.”

But legal experts say many people may not realize the licence rule applies to these shows. Daniel McAfee, Head of Legal Operations at Lawhive, explained: “Under UK law, any live television broadcast requires a valid TV Licence, regardless of the streaming platform.” He added: “Viewers should stay updated on licensing changes as streaming platforms expand live broadcast offerings.”
