Metallica Takes On Moscow With Powerful Sandman Performance

Metallica is one of those rock bands that has been around forever. In fact, they were playing back in the early 90s to crowds that had never been seen before.

It happened at a festival in Moscow in 1991 known as ‘Monsters of Rock’. According to many estimates, it was the largest concert in history with more than 1.6 million people in attendance. It also marked an amazing performance by the heavy metal band.

There was another concert that went on to beat this particular one, but it didn’t happen until 1997. Interestingly, it was also in Moscow, when Jean-Michel Jarre performed to a crowd of 3 million.

The series of rock concerts known as Monsters of Rock got started in 1980. At first, it was going to be a one-time event but eventually, it turned into an annual celebration of heavy metal with a growing number of people attending.

1991 just happened to be the biggest year because it was hosted in Moscow. It was not long after the fall of the Soviet Union.

The people of Moscow and of Russia in general were ready for such a concert. It’s little wonder that the Monsters of Rock performance was an epic moment in time.

Most people who are reading this would not have seen the concert but it was preserved in the video. You can see it here:
