You don’t have to wait very long until some issue comes up in the royal family that makes the news. This is especially true after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry stepped back from their roles in the royal family and moved to the United States.
Since moving to the United States, Meghan and Harry have two children together, Archie and Lilibet. They did retain their titles but they are not receiving financial support from the palace and they don’t take on any royal duties representing the monarch.
In addition, both Harry and Meghan spoke out in different ways, both in interviews and in written form about the culture of the family. This includes the interview in 2021 with Oprah Winfrey.
Now that they are not officially working with the royal family, they are working on setting up their own brand, Archewell. This includes running a podcast, documentaries, brand deals with Netflix and other organizations, and things seemed to be going well.
On September 8, 2022, things changed quickly when Queen Elizabeth II passed away. Her firstborn son, King Charles III became king on that day. Although the senior members of the royal family were in London to attend the traditional funeral rites and the procession. Meghan and Harry were there as well.
There has been some speculation on how Charles would deal with the Sussexes now that the royal family had changed so quickly. Would the rift between father and son be mended and how would things go between Harry and his brother, Prince William?
In October 2022, Megan sat down with Matt Donnelly from Variety for an interview. She spoke about being proud to have such a close relationship with the matriarch of the family.
She said: “I’m really grateful that I was able to be with my husband to support him, especially during that time. What’s so beautiful is to look at the legacy that his grandmother was able to leave on so many fronts. Certainly, in terms of female leadership, she is the most shining example of what that looks like. I feel deep gratitude to have been able to spend time with her and get to know her.”
She also told him that she had come to terms with the things people were saying. “I’ve had some time to reflect on it. Part of me is just really trusting, really open — that’s how I move in the world. I have to remember that I don’t ever want to become so jaded that that piece of me goes away. So despite any of those things? Onward. I can survive it.”
Meghan also launched Archetypes in 2022, where she speaks with people on every episode. This included an interview with Paris Hilton.
Meghan said: “I was embarrassed to admit it, but I’ve had a judgment about her that’s based on everything I’ve seen, and I don’t like to come from a place of judgment. But I also didn’t grow up pretty. … I grew up as the smart one. So much of what I ended up thinking about, when I thought about Paris, was envy and judgment — two of the most dangerous things.”
At the time, she also said that she was done with acting. She said: “I’m done. I guess never say never, but my intention is to absolutely not (to return to acting).” But, she did leave the possibility open if there was an interest in the show.
Meghan and Harry do look at the future with optimism and that includes the projects they work on. Meghan said:
“So much of how my husband and I see things is through our love story. I think that’s what people around the world connected to, especially with our wedding. People love love. I’m not excluded in that sentiment. And our definition of love is really expansive: Partner love, self-love, the love of community and family. We use that as the baseline of the kind of shows and documentaries we want out there.”
She also speaks about the hectic schedule they keep, saying: “My husband’s favorite is In-N-Out. There’s one at the halfway point between L.A. and our neck of the woods. It’s really fun to go through the drive-thru and surprise them. They know our order.”
