When you attend a sporting event, one of the things that will undoubtedly take place is the performance of the National Anthem. Unfortunately, many people fall short of the mark when it comes to singing that song in the United States.
Thinking about some of the different renditions of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’, there are both good and bad. In Super Bowl MMXXIII, Chris Stapleton pounded out a fantastic performance, but he was in the minority.
In the past, many people have failed when they tried to sing the song and some of them even got a lot of negative publicity as a result, including Roseann’s attempt in 1990 at a Padres game.
If you happen to be on hand for the 1994 National Anthem performance by Meat Loaf, then you really heard something special. He was on the field along with the Penn State ROTC colorguard, and people still talk about it.
Meat Loaf had been popular in the past but in the 90s, he had quite a resurgence of his career. MTV was big and his new album put him back in the spotlight.
In the 90s, he was in his 40s and he sang the song with all of his heart. You can tell that he was not only enjoying singing, he was enjoying being in front of the crowd.
Prior to singing the song, he said: “It’s one of the warmup songs I do before I go on stage. Then I go out and sing stuff that doesn’t resemble it. It’s a very dramatic song, and I’m going to sing it slow and dramatic.”
Undoubtedly, anybody who was on hand that day in 1994 remembers the moment that the crowd went silent and the music began playing. Meat Loaf brought all of his energy and gave chills that lasted for a long time.
You can see it for yourself in this video from the 1994 All-Star game.
