Lisa Niemi, Patrick Swayze’s Widow Opens Up About Living With The Late Actor

Many of us remember Patrick Swayze and many of the movies that he took part in. Some of his more iconic roles included Roadhouse, Ghosts and of course, Dirty Dancing. People who tend to follow celebrities feel as if they knew Patrick Swayze inside out. He was a relatively public figure and we heard a lot about him, although he wasn’t really around for the Internet lifestyle, as many celebrities are living today.

We may not have known everything about Patrick Swayze but it seems as if that is about to change. A new documentary is on the way that talks about the actor’s life, and his wife, Lisa Niemi is the producer. She talked with Entertainment Tonight before the release of the documentary, discussing the career of her late husband and his 2009 death after suffering through pancreatic cancer.

Lisa Niemi remembers Swayze every day fondly.

“It’s the worst thing in the world to go through,” Niemi says about her late husband’s cancer battle. “You spend every day fighting for that person’s life. I know that he spent every day fighting for his own … He survived 22 months, which was miraculous with the diagnosis that he received.”

She discusses how they met as teenagers when she was taking dance lessons from his mother. Talk about coincidence! In 1975 they were married and continued to be a happy couple until he died in 2009. “The first time Buddy (her nickname for Swayze) and I danced together was at a school exhibition,” Niemi explains. “We walked out on stage. I looked in his eyes, it was like everything came alive.”

There will also be some costars and friends of Swayze that will appear in the documentary. Some of those people include Jennifer Gray, Rob Lowe and Demi Moore. They talk about working with Swayze and discuss some of the issues he had, such as alcohol abuse and a separation from Niemi before he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

“When you lose someone, you never stop loving them and it’s — I feel like I have a different relationship with him now,” she says. “It’s just, he’s not physically present, you know what I mean?” She says she still talks to him “every day.”

The documentary is set to premiere on August 18, 2019. You can see it on the Paramount Network at 9 PM Eastern time. Incidentally, it is Swayze’s birthday on that day.
