TikTok has been the making of trends since it first emerged in the app store and now something is going on that has dentists worried that people are destroying their teeth and causing irreparable damage, and all for a minute of fame. In a dangerous new trend, people are grinding down their uneven teeth with fingernail files to create a more symmetrical smile. Several influencers have posted videos of themselves doing this to try to get their teeth into a straight line. They claim that it’s an efficient and inexpensive way to get a nicer smile without spending a lot of money at the dentist’s office.
However, dental professionals say that this trend can cause permanent damage to your teeth and the enamel on your teeth. It also destroys the tooth structure and is just an ignorant thing to do. Enamel is the outer layer of a person’s teeth and i9t has the job of protecting against the effect of harsh dietary acids. Once enamel is gone, it cannot be restored and will lead ultimately to tooth decay and sensitivity. When you remove your tooth structure, if you don’t know what you’re doing, you’re doing “irreparable damage and destruction to your teeth,” says Texas-based dentist Chad Evans.
A TikTok star named Mia Dio was one of the first influencers to share her video of shaving down her teeth and it was seen by a lot of people. “I’m going to file my teeth down with a nail file because they’re not perfect. I have some ridges, and we’re balling on a budget … trigger warning,” she said. Trigger, indeed. She’s pulling the trigger on her own dental enamel and she’ll regret this one day.
Doing this will damage your teeth enamel and cause you to end up spending a lot of money to get it fixed, and that defeats the entire purpose of filing them down to save money. Watch this disturbing video below, and don’t file your teeth.
