When Major Peter DeCrans found out he was going to be away from his family for a while, he surely felt what any of us would feel in the same situation. While he’s willing and eager to serve his country, soldiers pay a high price for their service because they’re in constant danger and away from their families for months at a time. Because of the Army’s strict security protocols, DeCrans knew he would have a hard time seeing and talking to his wife and children. However, after he deployed, his wife bought a Ring Video Doorbell so that the family could have some security in place.
Cierra DeCrans never imagined just what such a purchase would come to mean to the family. Certainly, the doorbell provided security for the family in their Forest Lake, Minnesota home, but it also ended up being a surprisingly special way for the soldier to stay in touch with his wife and children. As it turns out, the kids were able to leave messages for their dad via the Ring system. Before this, Cierra was having to set up a tripod and phone to film videos for the family. With the Ring doorbell, the kids just need to push a button to talk to their dad. Then, DeCrans can log into Ring from any device to watch the videos his kids send.
Interestingly, the soldier was happy about the device being set up so that he could keep an eye on his family even from another continent. However, it’s become so much more than that. DeCrans describes some pretty special moments to Ring, who posted the story on their company blog. He said that he was able to see what his wife was wearing every day, watch the neighbor kids come to see Girl Scout Cookies, and most importantly, he was able to see his children. He describes one special moment when he was able to see his little girl wearing a princess gown for her birthday.
Major DeCrans has three deployments under his belt, and hopefully, he’ll soon be home for good. Watch the news video about this story below.
