Many of us look at actors and other celebrities as having everything that they could possibly want in life. In reality, however, they experience the highs and lows of life, just like the rest of us.
Back in the 1980s and 1990s, Kevin Bacon was the go-to guy for many films. Whether he was dancing in Footloose or heading to the stars in Apollo 13, he brought a lot to the movies when he played a part in them.
As you can imagine, Kevin Bacon made a lot of money as he starred in those high-end movies, but there was something going on behind-the-scenes that many people didn’t know. It was financial problems that ended in financial disaster, and the majority of his wealth disappeared overnight.
Bacon spoke about this in the podcast Smartless, revealing that the majority of his wealth was given to Bernie Madoff. Madoff, who was responsible for the largest case of financial fraud in the history of the United States made off with his money and a grand total of about $64.8 billion.
He said: “We had most of our money in Madoff.” Although he didn’t reveal exactly how much money he lost, it may have been up to $30 million according to some estimates.
Eventually, Madoff would plead guilty to 11 federal felonies, including wire fraud, money laundering, and securities fraud. An untold number of clients had been defrauded, leaving many of them destitute.
He eventually passed away in prison at the age of 82.
Kevin Bacon may have lost millions of dollars, but he and his wife, Kyra Sedgwick, maintained their dignity. Rather than giving up in the face of all of the problems, they decided to put their best foot forward.
They had lost their retirement fund, and probably much more but he tried to keep everything in perspective. He acknowledged that they had suffered loss, but they still had a healthy family and could work their way back again.
They decided to leave northern Western Connecticut and the piece of land where they had called home for quite some time and take up farming. This was not something that they had originally planned.
Bacon was raised in Philadelphia but he loved horses from the time he was young. When he eventually visited Connecticut with his girlfriend at the time, he had the thought that owning a farm would be enjoyable.
They would pretend to be interested in buying a house but when they found an old farmhouse, they knew that they had found their destiny.
During the time that they lived on the farm, Bacon expanded the property and built up an oasis that would help their family during good times and bad times. They have many animals living there as well, including a group of goats.
Bacon has a unique way of interacting with those animals, and he sings and plays the guitar for the goats. They seem to really enjoy it, as do the many people who watch the videos they post.
Because of his love for those animals, he does not eat goat meat and he no longer eats meat from animals that he raises. Sedgwick said that they can’t get any more animals because she’s afraid that he will stop eating meat altogether.
We are so glad that they were able to overcome the difficulties they faced. We wish them many more years of happiness together.
