K9 Police Officer Dies After Being Left Overnight In Hot Car

When we hear about a dog that was left in an automobile, it sometimes can stir up very deep emotions. It can happen to anyone, and that is evident after what happened in a small Missouri town.

Horace, who was a police K-9 officer was left inside of a car overnight by deputies. Unfortunately, Horace succumbed to the heat after being stuck in the hot car for so long and died.

Chief David Vincent of the Savannah Police Department confirmed the news that the German Shepherd passed away last Thursday. It was due to health complications associated with spending the overnight shift in a hot vehicle.

At this point, they are investigating what took place but they are treating it as an accident. A special investigation has been called for by the Andrew County prosecuting Attorney, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol is taking the lead.

According to a statement: “The Andrew County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office is deeply saddened to learn of K-9 Horus’ passing. We are grateful to him for his service to our community.”

Unfortunately, the area of Savannah has been in the middle of a serious heat wave. At times, temperatures can reach 90° and the heat index value can easily reach 109°.

There are four different K-9 units that serve in the police department, Horace being one of them. He served as an officer since February 2021. They are working on bringing a number of new K-9 officers on board next week.

At this point, they have not disclosed the name of the officer responsible for the dog. Chief Vincent said: “Due to this being an open investigation, there will be no further information released until the investigation is completed. The entire department would appreciate your thoughts and prayers as we deal with the loss of our partner, Horus.”

No mention of the death of Horus has been seen on the Police Department’s Facebook page. The community is outraged at the lack of communication.
