There is an increasing need to be careful about what you say, as it can quickly turn around and come back to harm you. Joy Behar is now finding this out for herself after making a sexist remark about the new White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt.
While appearing on The View, Behar alleged that Leavitt’s looks were behind the reason why she was appointed. She said: “She’s probably been put in there because, according to Donald Trump, she’s a 10.”
Immediately after the comment was made, backlash started to come in. She was accused quickly of reducing the achievements of Leavitt to being something superficial rather than having to do with her qualifications.
One of the first to defend Leavitt was Alyssa Farah Griffin, a former Trump administration official. She was quick to point out that it wasn’t her first job but it was the first time she was at a press briefing.
Whoopi Goldberg was also critical of the press conference, saying that Leavitt’s comments about transgender and wokeness in federal agencies and the elimination of funding were offensive. Goldberg said that Leavitt would not be in her position if it weren’t for ‘wokeness’.
Goldberg also said ‘Women were not invited to that table’ and spoke about how struggles in the past made opportunities available for Leavitt. She said that the remarks associated with wokeness show that she doesn’t understand the difference between breaking down social barriers and something offensive.
Leavitt’s comments may have received negative feedback but there were also many on social media who were praising and supporting her. They felt that she was simply expressing what she believed in and standing up for her values.
