Flight Attendant Tells Us Why You Need To Say The Right Thing When They Say ‘Hello’

Most people would admit that flying is the most convenient way to get from one place to another. It is quick and is one of the safest ways to travel.

At the same time, however, many people have reservations about getting on a plane and flying at about 6 miles in the air. It can be unnerving, but thankfully we have our friendly flight attendants to greet us and make us feel welcome.

When you step onto a plane and the flight attendant says hello to you, we often answer with a quick hello in return. What you may not realize, however, is that your answer means more than what you could imagine.

In fact, if you give a wrong answer, the flight attendant may just flag you and have you removed from the flight. Don’t take this too lightly, because it could make the difference between you getting there or being inconvenienced.

Of course, flight attendants do want to be friendly to those who are boarding the plane but when they greet you with a hello, it is also to hear how you respond. Your response will help them to determine if you’ve had too much to drink or if you may be sick.

In either case, you present a risk to those on board as well as to the flight in general. I think that we’ve all seen videos of people being kicked off of flight, and it’s hard to tell how many were removed because they simply didn’t give the proper answer.

A flight attendant, Iona Iachim posted a video on TikTok to help people understand the situation further. They said that it wasn’t just a matter of being polite, but the fact that they give you a greeting was ‘to check whether or not you are too drunk or sick to fly’.

Another flight attendant who works for the Hungarian budget airline also backed up those claims. In the caption over the video of a crewmember addressing the passengers, it spelled it out perfectly.

It is important to ensure that we are safe when we are on the ground or in the air. It is of particular concern when you are on the plane, however, because the options to remove somebody are very limited once the flight is in the air.

So the next time you are greeted when you go on a flight, don’t let it go to your head and feel like they are trying to get to know you on a personal level. They just want to ensure that you are going to pose a problem that needs to be addressed before the plane takes off.
