There are often differences between men and women that are seen when they come together in the workplace. It’s a matter of social issues that are frequently debated, but now the debate is continuing in Sydney, Australia.
One female landscaper in Sydney decided that she wanted to step out beyond the double standard that she often sees in the workplace. That double standard is that men can work shirtless in the heat but women can’t.
If you’ve ever worked outside in the hot weather, you realize that the sun can be very difficult to handle. This is especially true if you are standing on a construction site or along the side of the road where the heat seems to build up relentlessly.
That is where Shianne Fox comes in. On social media, she is known as ‘The Bikini Tradie’ and she was venting her frustration on TikTok recently after being told she had to keep her shirt on while working outside. It was hot out, being about 104°F.
In her rant, she said: “It’s a f—ing 40-degree day today and I’m the one who has to wear my shirt, while all the boys on-site don’t have to wear theirs.
“It’s a double standard, it’s sexist, and I’m actually really over it. I just want to be topless like the boys—but no, I will ‘distract them”
Because of the heat, Fox often works in a bikini top but she is more interested in equal treatment. Like her male counterparts, she would like to be able to work without a shirt on.
Fox is no stranger to working with men. Over the past four years, she has worked in industries that are often dominated by men but she wears a bikini to stay comfortable. She also is comfortable with the way that she looks and feels and it doesn’t matter to her if her request is not inappropriate.
Her argument is that it shouldn’t be distracting to work topless because it is a ‘natural thing’. Other people point out the fact that those standards exist for a reason and you should be professional before you consider your personal comfort.
She said: “It was such a hot day. Obviously, when you work in the industry, lots of the boys have their tops off. I thought it was only fair if I could get mine off, too. I have no shame in getting my b–bs out.”
“I don’t think it should be ‘distracting’ because at the end of the day they’re just a natural thing. At the end of the day, we all have breasts. It’s just a natural thing. If you’re going to be childish and feel like they’re going to be distracting, then you should just grow up.”
Aside from feeling it is natural, she also runs an adult website and shares her content without any clothes on. She feels that it is a controversial stance but if she speaks out, more women may want to join those men at their place of work.
She may have strong feelings, but there are many other women who work in the industry who don’t feel similarly to her. Often, she will share videos and pictures on social media, including working on the job in a bikini top. Those videos get a lot of attention.
