There have been many people who have voiced their concerns about the state of the United States at this point in time. People tend to be politically motivated these days, and citizenship is sometimes called into question.
A number of celebrities have come forward in recent years to say that they would move out of the country and never come back if certain people were elected into office. Others were just as passionate about other politically motivated factors.
It isn’t out of the question for people to talk about how dissatisfied they are with the policies and politics in the United States. It’s something different altogether, however, when somebody gives up their citizenship status completely.
It doesn’t happen very often, but there are some expatriates who have renounced their citizenship after moving to another country. They have severed their responsibilities with the United States and started on a new journey elsewhere.
Something like this happened recently shortly after the US Supreme Court revealed that it would overturn Roe vs Wade. The frontman for Green Day, Billie Joe Armstrong made the public announcement at a London concert that he would renounce his US citizenship.
It was during his performance that he heard of the court’s ruling so he spoke to the crowd in London. He spoke about how dissatisfied he was that the US was not safeguarding women’s reproductive rights and announced that his citizenship would be renounced.
He continued to talk about the United States negatively during the show and on the following day. Others also did so, including popstar Olivia Roderigo, who said that the conservative justices (and she named them) were in the wrong.
She said: “This song goes out to the justices: Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh. We hate you!”
