The LA wildfires have produced tragedies beyond measure. The death toll continues to rise, and the number of homes that have been destroyed is an ongoing figure.
Included among the 24 individuals who have already died as a result of the wildfires is a father and son. Anthony and Justin Mitchell were trying to evacuate but they were unable to get away from the advancing flames. The family is devastated by the loss.
Hajime White, Anthony’s daughter said that her father was being evacuated but was still waiting for an ambulance. He and Justin were trying to get from their home in Altadena, California, but the ambulance never got there.
According to authorities, White was informed that Anthony was found by Justin’s bed. Justin, who had cerebral palsy and was in his early 20s died, likely while his father was trying to save him.
White said: “He was not going to leave his son behind. No matter what.” She went on to describe her 67-year-old father as a kind man, who was retired and an amputee. He was in a wheelchair.
His daughter also said that she talked to him the day before they were trying to evacuate. Her father told her that the fire was breaking out and they were going to have to evacuate, then he said “I’ve got to go — the fire’s in the yard.”
Anthony and Justin never made it out of the home. Jordan, who is another son in his 20s is in the hospital due to the fire.
Justin used a computer to communicate due to his disability. He was the half-brother of White but both he and his father will be missed by the family.
Anthony had four children and 11 grandchildren as well as 10 great-grandchildren.
White spoke about the impact that the death of her father had on her. She is waiting to get word from the rest of the family in Los Angeles when she can fly in safely to make funeral arrangements.
