Like many award shows, the Oscars give celebrities an opportunity to voice their opinion when giving a speech. Sometimes, these opinions may be politically motivated.
At the 2025 Oscars, host Conan O’Brien made a comment about Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. It wasn’t all that subtle, and it has many people either cheering or rolling their eyes.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was at the White House on February 28 for a meeting with Pres. Donald Trump. They were talking about the ongoing war with Russia, and it wasn’t long before the meeting turned into a shouting match.
Thousands of lives have been lost in the conflict which started in February 2022. This includes 95,000 Russian soldiers and over 46,000 Ukrainian soldiers.
Political leaders from around the world are interested in ending the conflict, and this includes Trump. In the meeting that Trump had with the Ukrainian leader, however, he warned him that he was gambling with World War III.
Trump said: “You’re in no position to dictate what we’re going to feel. We’re going to feel very good. We’re going to feel very good and very strong. You’re right now, not in a very good position, you’ve allowed yourself to be in a very bad position.
“You don’t have the cards right now. With us, you start having cards … You’re gambling with the lives of millions of people! You’re gambling with World War Three! You’re gambling with World War III. And what you’re doing is very disrespectful to the country – this country.”
It would be typical for somebody to make mention of this type of political outburst at the Oscars. Host O’Brien said: “Anora’s doing great tonight. Two awards. I think Americans are finally ready for someone to stand up to a powerful Russian.”
Obviously, this was in reference to what took place in the White House.
We knew that we couldn’t get through an award show without something like this being said.
