One of the most difficult things that we could face in life is going through dementia. If you’ve ever had a family member who had to go through such a problem, you realize that it can impact that individual as well as everyone who cares for them. It’s very difficult to watch somebody going through this type of situation and most families are not equipped to care for that individual on their own. Many times, they find themselves in a nursing home and struggling to get by from one day to the next.
Although dementia is a very difficult and progressive situation, there are times when something may help the individual who is suffering. Jean Makesh understands a little bit about people with dementia because he owns three nursing homes that specialize in those types of patients. Of course, there are nursing homes that specialize in dementia patients everywhere but his facilities are a little different. It has to do with the design, which is being praised with helping to assist those with dementia and the confusion that they have.
When a person has dementia, they are typically confused about their current situation but they may still have memories from when they were younger.
Living every day in a facility under fluorescent skies may also make things difficult. Jean started to look into the effect that the environment had on his patients at the facility. That is when he decided to give it a makeover.
What he created was a miniature town inside of the facility that resembled something straight out of the 1940s. Smart lights were installed to replace the fluorescent lights so it would mimic the rising and setting of the sun.
He then added sounds and aromatherapy to the facility to make it a very familiar and peaceful environment. In the end, he saw the benefits and we can only hope that more people will follow in his footsteps.
