People will go a long way to get the perfect selfie and unfortunately, there are times when they may pay the ultimate price for it. That is what happened to influencers who refused to wear lifejackets and they drowned when the boat sank.
Aline Tamara Moreira de Amorim, 37, and Beatriz Tavares da Silva Faria, 27 were taking part in a yacht party when their boat sank off of the coast last month. Unfortunately, the two influencers lost our lives.
They had been with another, larger group and were taking selfies and enjoying some time out at sea. The Brazilian influencers regularly posts those pictures online, but there were too many people on the boat as the party was ramping up.
According to Marcos Alexandre Alfino, the Sao Vincente police Commissioner, they would not wear a life jacket because it would ruin their selfies. He said: “Some didn’t want to put them on because they were taking selfies.
“They said that they get in the way of their tanning.”
The skipper of the boat, who was not identified by name is working along with the police. He also attempted to save the two influencers as the boat was sinking.
There were only five survivors, including the captain. He was told to take the six influencers back to land, as his boat was only able to hold five passengers.
The other survivors included Vanessa Audrey da Silva, Camila Alves de Carvalho, Daniel Goncalves Ferreira, Gabriela Santos Lima, and Natan Cardoso Soares da Silva.
The boat was not able to handle all of the weight on board when it was hit with a large wave and started to sink. They found Beatriz’s body first but it was already drifting out to sea. It took another week for Aline to be found. Her body washed on shore at Itaquitanduva Beach.
According to the police Commissioner, “All this is being determined very calmly to conclude if the fatalities were based on recklessness or negligence.”
Aline, who had one child, posted her last social media post on the boat. She was not able to swim. According to Vanessa, the group met up to go out on a luxury yacht and party and they had been drinking. They eventually attempted to make their way home in two different groups.
Vanessa was able to survive after the boat was hit by the waves. She found a lifejacket and held onto the rocks to keep from drowning. She said: “There was a moment in the water when no one could see anyone. I was fighting for life.”
Camellia is another survivor who said she held a lifejacket in her hand. She said: “There were very strong waves, we almost died. We didn’t know how to swim. I knew that I couldn’t take it for long. I hurt my foot and swallowed a lot of water.
“We threw ourselves into the rocks.”
