There are many privileges to being the president of the United States but one that is often overlooked is the possibility of commuting death sentences for federal inmates. President Joe Biden has taken advantage of that privilege.
Recently, and just a few days before Christmas, President Joe Biden released the death sentence of 37 federal inmates. He didn’t let them out of prison but rather, he gave them life in prison without parole.
A number of very dangerous individuals who committed heinous crimes were included in the pardon. Mass murderers, child killers, and similar people were released from the possibility of being given the death penalty.
Joe Biden has been opposed to the death penalty and has been very vocal about it. He said that his decision to make these changes was part of his commitment to a fair justice system. He feels that the death penalty should not be used and said that he is concerned that it may be reinstated by future administrations.
One of the individuals who was spared was Thomas Sanders. He was found guilty of murdering a 12-year-old girl after killing her mother.
Another person who was pardoned is Jorge Avila-Torrez. He was found guilty of killing two young girls after assaulting them sexually and he murdered a naval officer. Also included in the list is Kaboni Savage, who killed at least 12 people, including children.
Some of the higher profile cases were not changed, including the Boston Marathon bomber, the synagogue shooter, and the Charleston church shooter.
Biden is also responsible for some other presidential pardons. This included a pardon for Hunter Biden, his son. Some 1500 people who had been released temporarily during the COVID-19 pandemic were also pardoned.
Some people say that it was compassion on his part but others say that he has a twisted sense of justice. That is especially true when violent crimes are included.
There will always be people on both sides of the debate when it comes to capital punishment. In this particular case, however, there are many who are unhappy with the decision.
