Bullfighting is something that is a questionable sport, to say the least but it is still practiced in some parts of the world. This includes in Mexico City.
January 19, 2025, was the day of the Anniversary Fair in Mexico City and one of the big events was the bullfighting. In the first bullfight at José Garfias ‘Hechicero’ ranch, something unexpected happened.
@michael_film_ shows uploaded video to Instagram showing Borja Jiménez, a Spanish matador taunting a large bull around the ring with a bright pink cloth. It seems as if the torero has the bull under control but then something went wrong.
Suddenly, the bull ran toward the barriers that surrounded the ring and leapt over them. It then crashed over the wall and flew toward the audience, with people trying to jump out of the way or even running fron the scene.
According to PEOPLE, there were no injuries to any humans when the bull jumped the barrier. Online, the incident has started a heated debate.
Many who saw the footage on Instagram ware wondering why this level of animal cruelty still happened and there were others that were happy the bull was fighting back.
This isn’t the first time that bullfighting has come under fire. According to the Humane Society International, there ae some 250,000 bulls killed each year from this sport.
The following is from their website: “Every year, approximately 250,000 bulls are killed in bullfights. Bullfighting is already banned by law in many countries including Argentina, Canada, Cuba, Denmark, Italy and the United Kingdom.
“Although legal in Spain, some Spanish cities, such as Calonge, Tossa de Mar, Vilamacolum and La Vajol, have outlawed the practice of bullfighting. There are only a few countries throughout the world where this practice still takes place (Spain, France, Portugal, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, and Ecuador).”
In a bullfight, the bull is stabbed with a sword by the matador until it dies. If the bull performs well, it is sometimes also released.
There is no indication what happened to the bull that jumped the barricade.
