One of the things that many celebrities must do but don’t often discuss openly is sign a prenuptial agreement. This can work to the benefit of either party in the marriage, but things don’t always go as planned.
Alec Baldwin and his wife had a prenup before they got married, and they recently began talking about the issue with the document when filming their new reality show. That reality show has really opened up their lives to public scrutiny in strange ways.
The show, which airs on TLC is called ‘The Baldwins’ and it stars, as you would expect, Alec Baldwin and his wife, Hilaria. On the latest episode, they were talking about some of the early parts of their relationship, but they focused on their decision to sign a prenuptial agreement.
In case you didn’t know, the prenuptial agreement, or prenup is signed ahead of getting married to ensure that, if they should divorce, the assets are split according to their original arrangement.
Baldwin spoke about his first marriage to Kim Basinger, which lasted from 1993 until 2002. He said: “After my first marriage I said, ‘Let’s have a prenup.'”
Hilaria said that she didn’t fully understand what a prenuptial agreement was and she didn’t look into the significance of the document before they signed it. It was signed prior to their wedding in June 2012.
She said: “I just don’t understand quite what a prenup is. Because you are like, ‘After a certain number of kids it is this.’ And I was like, ‘You know what? I will just sign it.’
“Which was probably very stupid of me back then.
“Now, I would read it again. I just said, ‘I won’t sign it. I don’t really want to think about the end by the beginning.’ And then you were like, ‘I don’t want to do it either.’”
