There has been a lot of talk since Beyoncé won the Grammy Award for Best Country Album. She seemed genuinely surprised when the announcement came in from Taylor Swift, but there were others who were excited about the award as well.
One individual who seemed to be very thrilled for Beyoncé was her husband, Jay-Z. When Taylor Swift opened the envelope and called her name for the award, associated with her album, Cowboy Carter, she looked like she didn’t know what to say.
Eventually, Jay-Z encouraged her to stand up and go get the award. When she stood up, Jay-Z gave her a hug along with her daughter, Blue Ivy. it was then that he leaned over to whisper in her ear.
There has been a lot of speculation over what he may have said and it seems that the comments just keep coming. Fortunately, we have an official lip reader, NJ Hickling, and they have shed some light on the mystery that all of us have been curious about.
Hickling said that there were nine words the musician said to his wife: “Woah woah woah. Bout time! You’re a top girl.” It was truly words of encouragement from a husband to a wife.
After Beyoncé got up on the stage, she gave an accepted speech, starting: “Wow I really was not expecting this.”
She then went on to say: “I want to thank God, oh my God, that I’m able to still do what I love after so many years.
“I’d like to thank all of the incredible country artists that accepted this album. We worked so hard on it. I think sometimes genre is a code word to keep us in our place as artists. And I just want to encourage people to do what they’re passionate about, and to say, ‘Stay persistent.'”
The singer also dedicated her award to one of the pioneers of black musicians and country music, Linda Martell. She was the first black woman to perform at the grand old Opry solo and features on several songs from Cowboy Carter.
This seems to be appropriate because Beyoncé became the first black woman to win a Grammy for Album of the Year since 1999, when Lauryn Hill won the award.
Beyoncé was nominated in 11 categories and won three awards, Album of the Year, Best Country Album and Best Country Duo/Group Performance for ‘II Most Wanted’ with Miley Cyrus.
