10 Reasons Why ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ Is The Greatest Movie That No One Remembers

It seems as if we are constantly bombarded with new movies. For some people, it’s an amazing experience because they enjoy going to the movies and everything that they offer. For others, they may watch a popular movie here or there but they soon find that they are lagging behind and they have no idea what is going on when a conversation about those movies starts. It doesn’t matter if your favorite type of movie is a comedy, action, romance or anything else, you probably have a movie that jumps into your mind immediately.

Some of the new movies are a lot of fun to watch but when you compare them to the movies from the 1980s, they seem to be lacking. One of the reasons why that is the case it’s because many of the 80s movies are iconic because of their dance steps. Stop for a minute to think about some of the classic movies like Dirty Dancing, Footloose or Flashdance. People are still talking about those movies today, even though they have been out for decades. If you loved those movies, there is one movie that is often overlooked but it should be on your list of things to watch. If you have watched it before, it’s time to watch it again.

I’m talking about the movie, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. It’s time to rent it and watch it again. Yes, it’s over three decades old but there are many reasons to love it. Here are 10 to consider.

1. It’s a fish out of water story

Sarah Jessica Parker plays Janie Glenn, a girl who moves to Chicago when her father gets transferred. She starts life in a new school and talks about her love of dancing immediately. That very night, she runs into Helen Hunt, who plays Lynne Stone and they become best friends.

She does more than become her friend, she helps her pursue her dreams in a big way.

Rather than being stuck with the schedules, rules and military time of her former life, she learns how to have fun.

2. They take things to the next level quickly

When you see a movie with dance moves, you don’t want to wait until you see it start. It does take some time to develop a plot but once the dance begins, the movie just gets better.

When Lynne introduces herself to Janey, she changes her outfit on the bus in front of her and they start watching Dance TV at the house where she has a babysitting job.

It only takes a few minutes of the movie and we know where it is heading. Janey is itching to enter a dance contest and Lynne wants to be a star on DTV. It really is not a very deep movie but it is so much fun to watch.

3. The perfect dance contest

Stop for a moment to consider the epic montages of this movie, of which there are plenty. The first is the dance contest where they are trying to make it beyond the first round.

People are dancing everywhere but Janey stands out. You are not going to believe the flips and other acrobatics. Incidentally, this is where she meets Jeff.

Jeff also has a lot of talent as a dancer and he loved showing off on the stage. I guess he didn’t really need much more to get started in the competition.

4. There is the classic odd couple relationship

Jeff and Janey get together, although he is fully untrained and she is a perfectionist. There is definitely something good on the horizon.

It is similar to Dirty Dancing, but put it on its head. Janey has to teach Jeff to dance and she gets frustrated with him at times.

5. Strained relationships make the movie better

There are some struggles to take place but it is still loads of fun to watch. They continually get on each other’s nerves and then Natalie comes into the picture and tries to sabotage everything.

6. Girl power

Natalie is trying to ruin the opportunity for Janey to win but Lynne shows up to help save the day. A sabotage of the party is planned because they want to invite a lot of people that she didn’t want.

When they break into the party and destroy everything, it gets interesting but the best part is that Jeff realizes Janey isn’t quite as uptight as he thought.

7. True friendships and house arrest

Everybody needs a best friend and Lynne Stone is the one that every girl should have in their life. She helped Janey to pursue her dreams and when a security system is put on her window by her father, she comes to the rescue.

After helping her to get down to the lower floor, she takes her to the studio in the nick of time. Be sure to pay attention to the awesome hairdo!

8. Even more dance montages

You’re probably wondering how they could actually add more montages into this story but it really makes things get better. The finalist dance routines are going on while her father tries to make it to the station to see his daughter after he saw her on TV.

9. Nothing can stop them now

Janey and Jeff have already pulled off the perfect routine and I’m sad to say, it even beats Dirty Dancing. Anyway, this movie was out two years before Dirty Dancing hit the scene.

10. Lynne Stone is once again the winner.

Lynne Stone is absolutely the real star of the movie. She does everything so perfectly and she deserves everything that comes her way. She finally earns the spot she wants as the self-appointed queen of DVT and it seems that she has found her true purpose in life.

We would all like to see a sequel to this. Perhaps we could get in touch with Helen Hunt and find out if it is possible.
