1-Year-Old Is Sent Outside At Daycare Without Shoes And Gets 2nd-Degree Burns On Her Feet

When we are parents, we want the best for our children. We make sure we feed them and they are wearing the clothing that will keep them comfortable and safe. At times, we may even take them to the doctor’s office when they aren’t feeling well. We even make tough decisions at times for who is going to care for our children when we are working and often, it is a matter of sending them off to a local daycare. It is something that parents do every day.

When we drop our kids off for the day, we expect that they are going to get the same, good treatment that they get at home. For the most part, that is true but sometimes we hear a report that makes our skin crawl. That is sure to be your reaction when you hear this story that happened to a mother from Brenham Texas.

Tiffanie Cedillo picked her 1-year-old daughter up from daycare and was shocked when she looked at her feet. It seems that the workers at the daycare center sent her outside in the heat without shoes for a few hours. The little girl had second-degree burns on the bottom of her feet.

“She was screaming when I went to go pick her up,” Cedillo said.

Many children scream, especially at daycare so she didn’t think much of it. When she looked at her feet, however, she realized how bad things were.

The little girl’s feet were covered with red patches and blisters.

She started asking the employees at the daycare for an explanation of what had happened. They then said something that showed how irresponsible they were.

“She said she was sent out on the playground with no shoes on, because earlier that day she had diarrhea and it went down to her shoes,” said Cedillo.

They didn’t even stop to think that the direct sun on the pavement would be too much for the little girl’s feet.

“I was heartbroken when I saw her foot because half of her foot was blistered,” said Cedillo.

Cedillo took her daughter to the emergency room. She also contacted the police.

When you stop to think about the carelessness that they displayed, it was completely justified.

“It was almost a hundred degrees yesterday,” said Cedillo. “It’s just common sense you don’t send kids out barefoot on the playground. My child was neglected and I would like for people to know that.”

There is a lot of danger on the playground when it is hot outside. The equipment and pavement are hot enough to be a hazard for bare skin.

Since a child’s skin is so sensitive, it is easier to burn than an adult. Tom Kalousek is a playground safety inspector and he said:

“Younger children, especially under 5 years old, can suffer second- or third-degree burns in a matter of moments. They take their shoes and socks off and use their hands and feet to get around and don’t realize the dangers.”

We can all learn lessons from what happened that day. The unfortunate reality, however, is that a little girl had to suffer before we learned them.

Cedillo lost her trust in daycares and now, she looks to care for her children herself. She has a nursery at her job so she can watch her daughter while she works.

That isn’t an option that will work for all mothers. Some parents must leave their kids with daycare and hope that they are giving the same care they would get at home.

Not all daycares are that incompetent but it is a lesson that all of us can take to heart. If you have any doubts, then follow up on them before it is too late.
