Talented Doctor Sews A Baby Blanket As A Gift For Every Newborn Baby He Delivers

Doctors are rather interesting individuals, and that is surely the case with those who deliver babies. Dr. Erik Bostrom of Aitkin, Minnesota, however, does more than just bring those children into the world. He is known for doing something else and the internet is buzzing. Dr. Bostrom takes the time to sew a blanket with his own hands for every baby that he delivers. It is a gesture that we have never even heard of before.

He is a family doctor who works at the Riverwood Healthcare Center and part of his responsibilities is delivering babies. He goes above and beyond, however with this kind gesture. It really starts with his attitude, and he feels joy from bringing those new lives into the world. He just takes things a step further by sharing that joy.

“Much of my time is spent taking care of old and sick people,” Dr. Bostrom explained. “[But in delivering babies] rather than sadness and hardship, people are full of joy and excitement. It’s a really cool part of medicine.”

Dr. Bostom started sewing personalized blankets and giving them to every baby he delivers. He had always wanted to give a gift but at first, he didn’t know what to give. When one of his colleagues suggested baby blankets, the idea was born. The problem was, he didn’t have any experience with sewing.

“I’ve sewn a lot of people, a lot of skin,” Dr. Bostrom clarified. “But I never sewed fabric.”

He isn’t one that backs down when the going gets tough. He decided to put his best foot forward and try. It took watching a few videos online and getting tips from his family but in the end, he found his own pace.

“They taught me how to use a sewing machine. It was actually a lot easier than I thought it would be,” Dr. Bostrom shared his initial thoughts.

The doctor started to sew blankets to perfect his skill. He would put soft fabric on one side and flannel on the other side. After sewing them together, they would be sent out to be personalized for each baby. The information included on the blanket is the name, date of birth, weight and length. This is really a unique and thoughtful gift.

After a year, the embroiderer he was using moved away from the area. He wanted to continue with the tradition so he got a sewing machine and took up stitching and embroidering. Before long, he was mastering the process.

“The best part of it in my mind is that it was made by Husqvarna, and that’s the same brand as my chain saw,” Dr. Bostrom shared in an interview. “And I thought it was cool that I could cut down trees and sew baby blankets with the same brand of equipment.”

Dr. Bostrom has delivered more than 200 babies so far. Most of them were during his residency so he hasn’t actually made 200 blankets, The real number is 15 but that number is sure to rise as more babies are born.

This doctor really puts his heart and soul into his work. If you think about all of the time he spends as a family doctor and then to spend another 3 or 4 hours making a blanket, it really tells you something about him.

Admittedly, he feels that he would never be the person who would sew for others. It seems that he is able to do it with style.

“Three years ago, if you had told me I would be creating gifts for people by sewing, I would have laughed at you,” Dr. Bostrom shared. “But making something for someone makes it that much cooler. I never thought sewing could be so much fun.” With Dr. Bostrom playing a big role in the life of the babies he delivered, who could blame the thoughtful doctor for becoming sentimental?
