If you think back a few years, the name Susan Boyle is probably going to ring a bell. She appeared on Britain’s Got Talent eight years ago and although nobody was expecting much out of her, she absolutely blew the judges and the audience away. When she sang “I Dreamed a Dream”, it was a performance that would put her at a level of international fame that very few people are able to achieve.
If you don’t know the backstory, Boyle was a charity worker who was unemployed and living at home with her cat, Pebbles. She walked out on the stage at Britain’s Got Talent to give her audition and she said she wanted to be as famous as Elaine Page. Simon Cowell was not very happy with her being there and he even looked as if he may have mocked her in his mind.
You should never be too quick to judge a book by its cover. Boyle may have looked a little unkempt, but she knew how to work the crowd. She sang one song and became a living legend.
You can see her original performance of I Dreamed a Dream in this video:
Boyle has now reached a level of fame internationally and she takes advantage of it. She has a very lucrative singing career, has released over five albums and sold 25 million records worldwide.
Her second album, The Gift, contained many classic holiday songs, including Away in a Manger, the First Noel, Auld Lang Syne and O Holy Night. It was the performance of the last song on Larry King Live that would become a classic.
When Boyle begins singing, the stage is dark but the light slowly revealed that she has an angelic children’s choir standing behind her. She may be wearing a black dress but it is a contrast to the beautiful silky, white robes being worn by the choir.
Boyle starts to sing the song and her traditional voice does it justice.
“O holy night, the stars are brightly shining, it is the night of our dear Savior’s birth; long lay the world in sin and error and pining till He appeared and the soul felt its worth…”
About the third verse, the choir behind her starts to harmonize and it is beautiful. It’s difficult to watch without getting goosebumps. Go ahead and try it for yourself by watching this video:
