All of us need to move as much as we’re physically able to and that need doesn’t go away when we get older. For all living things, movement is vital to our health and wellness, but not every kind of exercise is a blast if you know what I mean. One senior living facility recognized that the old chair exercise routines weren’t exactly exciting to everyone, so they’ve gotten creative. To keep their residents active, the Green Country Village Senior Living facility has their residents line dancing (those who are able) and beating a drum. How much fun does this sound?
The seniors dance and beat the drums to catchy tunes that they enjoy. The videos show rooms full of seniors who are having a great time. The line dancing looks like a lot of fun, but it seems to me that some of these folks are taking some angst out on those “drums.” They get a set of drumsticks and the seniors beat the drums to “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars. They’re even enjoying contemporary music and that’s awesome. The activity includes leg stretches, crossovers, raising their hands above their heads, and more. At some point, all of the body parts are mostly used to do this activity.
They shared a video on Facebook and it has more than 80K comments and lots of shares, along with 243K reactions. At last count, it had more than 30 million views. It’s just a fun video and you can’t help but smile and wish you had your own drum to beat on. The facility posted a big thank you to everyone who has praised the work of the activity directors during this challenging time. At present, because of the pandemic, seniors need activities more than ever because they can’t see their families.
