Furnace Repairman Shocks Dad After Leaving Note On The Receipt About His Newborn

When you have a young child in the home, you quickly realize that they become a priority. Any parent will tell you that it is a lot to handle and sometimes, it can feel like the pressure is weighing down on you when things don’t go as they should. Through it all, however, we realize that the little ones are well worth any effort that we have to put into it. We do our best to protect them and to keep them comfortable.

The unfortunate reality of life is that sometimes, our love and affection does not shield the child from having any problems. Sometimes, a family may experience hardships out of the blue and one of those is if the furnace breaks when it is freezing cold outside. That is what happened to Jesse and Maria Hulscher on February 23. They were dealing with a harsh Minnesota winter when suddenly, the furnace went out. If that wasn’t difficult enough, they were about to bring their son, Adler, home from the hospital after being born a few days prior.

Maria and Adler were still in the hospital but Jesse and a two-year-old child were home. They were getting the house ready for the new arrival and they realized that they needed to act quickly.

“Instantly I panicked,” Jesse said. “I have a two-year-old here, a newborn coming home in a couple days and this was before the big potential snow storm.”

That is when Jesse called Magnuson Sheet Metal to see if they could fix the furnace before bringing the newborn son home. Jesse was speaking with the co-owner, Craig Aurand and he could obviously sense how urgent the situation was. It only took 20 minutes and someone was knocking at the door.

“He said ‘the fan’s not working, the furnace isn’t working, my wife is in the hospital, we just had a baby yesterday,’” Aurand recalled. “I just said take it easy, we’ll be right there.”

They quickly fixed the problem and turned the heat back on to the house before the baby was brought home. Jesse and Maria were so impressed by the service that they received but they got an extra surprise when the bill arrived. He said:

“I opened it up and looked at the receipt and it said, ‘no charge, take care of the new baby,’” Jesse said. While Maria recalled, “I was like, ‘what? No. This can’t be real.’ And he’s like, ‘I know I can’t believe it either.’”

Magnuson Sheet Metal is known for not charging families when a small job happens on the holidays. The owner says that his business believes in those types of kind actions and helping the community.

“We didn’t do it for the PR, we just did it to be good people. That’s it. Just to be nice to these people,” he said. “That’s what this is about.”
