Obese Man Loses 266 Lbs And Completes His First Half Marathon

We may talk about many different things today but if you are in a conversation long enough, the topic is likely to turn to diet and exercise. It seems as if everybody is obsessed over the topic and we all have our own ideas as to how we could lose weight, if we really wanted to try it. When you get down to it, change is a very difficult thing and we may have a desire to make a change in our life but it isn’t always the easiest thing to do it. Every once in a while, however, we hear about somebody that makes more than a small change, they make a change that is inspirational.

In England, there is a man named Darren “Dibsy” Mcclintock who used it to tip the scales at 560 pounds. Many of us are carrying around a few extra pounds but when you are that morbidly obese, it is likely to have an effect on your health before too long. After going to the doctors, Darren was told that his heart was going to be affected if he didn’t lose weight and it was the wake-up call that he needed. In the end, he did more than lose weight, he inspired thousands of people.

Even though he was only 27 years old, he knew that he wouldn’t be around very long if he didn’t make a change. He then connected with a personal trainer named Mike Hind who takes on one client for free on an annual basis.

Mike ran into Dibsy and his mother at the Macro Based Diner in 2018, which is associated with his gym. He knew that he wanted him to be his client. After talking with him, he gave him the push that he needed. Dibsy said yes and Mike remembers it: “His mum burst out crying and said no parent would want to bury her child.”

Fast food seemed to be the trigger that really pulled Dibsy into an unhealthy eating style. He created flyers to hand out at the Middlesboro restaurants where Dibsy frequented, asking them not to serve him any food.

Over the following year, Dibsy made some phenomenal changes in his diet. He got rid of potato chips, donuts and alcohol and started going to the gym regularly and eating a balanced diet. Since starting he has lost 266 pounds, so he is half the man he used to be.

“It’s been very hard — like, to the point where I’ve just wanted to walk out and give up, but obviously I’ve got these people around me who keep me motivated, keep me going,” Dibsy said.

But it’s all been completely worth it. “I’m living life now!” he added. “It’s just a matter of keeping going with it.”

As he continued to get healthier, the 28-year-old began seeing the benefits of the changes in his life. He even accomplished something phenomenal.

Mike and Dibsy joined thousands of other people in September for the world’s biggest half marathon, the Great North Run. They raise money for the Boro Walkers Association and prepared for the day.

Not only did Dibsy compete, he outdid his goal of four hours, crossing the finish line in two hours and 43 minutes.

“The sense of achievement is unbelievable,” Dibsy said. “If you’d told me I would be doing the Great North Run even a month ago, I would have laughed!”

Dibsy is now on a quest to raise money for surgery to remove excess skin. You can help his crowdfunding campaign here.

This young man is now enjoying his healthier lifestyle and working hard to make it work.
