We don’t hear a lot about long-time friendships in Hollywood, which makes the friendship between Actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet something quite special. They have managed to have a warm relationship for going on 23 years now, and it seems that these two are destined to be life long pals.
DiCaprio and Winslet met on the set of the Oscar-winning movie “Titanic” in 1996. She was 21-years old, and he was 22. Their on-screen romance and chemistry were so believable that rumors about a secret relationship in real life were next to impossible to avoid.
However, Winslet stated on multiple occasions during filming, that Leo helped her fight her low self-esteem. It’s also interesting that the first scene they were in together was where Jack was drawing Rose’s portrait (scenes are not always shot in order).
And by the way, when she found out that she was supposed to appear before Leo completely naked in this scene, she made a radical decision. The first time they met Kate put a coat on over her naked body, then she just opened it up in front of him. She thought that this brave gesture would help them both avoid an awkward situation once they start shooting the scene. Even today, they still love quoting lines from Titanic, and they continue to share a good laugh over their scenes together.

After Titanic, they continued to enjoy a strong friendship, and according to the actors, they have never been involved together in a romantic relationship. Their second film together was “Revolutionary Road” released in 2008. In the film, Kate and Leo play a married couple. The director of the film was Sam Mendes, who at the time was Kate’s husband.
After the film wrapped up production, Leo presented Kate with an engraved ring. The words are a secret. Kate also won the Golden Globe for her role in “Revolutionary Road.” As she was receiving her award, she dedicated some very kind words to her partner in the film and Leo was blowing kisses at her. Interestingly, when it was announced that Kate won, the first person she hugged was Leo, and her husband was next.
Since the time they first met, there have been a lot of unpleasant events in Kate’s life. The actress has since been married twice, and she has had some very tough public break-ups. She also has two children from both relationships and raising them alone has been very difficult, given her tight work schedule. During these times, Leo has even stepped in to help Kate with the kids.
In December 2012, Kate married Ned Rocknroll (not a typo) who is the nephew of billionaire businessman Richard Branson. During their wedding, Leo was the one to walk Kate down the aisle. Several years later, Kate’s mother passed away from cancer. As the actress mentions, her friend Leo literally rescued her from despair.
And here’s a fun fact. Ned legally changed his last name from Rocknroll to Smith in 2019. We’re guessing as cool of a name that is; it can probably get a bit tiresome after a while.
In 2016, the industry was in turmoil as many actors chose to boycott the Oscar ceremony that year due to the discrimination of black actors. The same year, Leonardo DiCaprio was nominated for an Oscar for “The Revenant,” and Kate decided to support her friend since she had a gut feeling that it was his year to win the award finally. And she was right!
And over the years, the friendship of these two Oscar-winning actors has gotten only stronger.
Kate explains that they’ve managed to build and maintain such a strong friendship because they have never been in love with one another and haven’t even flirted with each other. Leo said that he always loved working with Kate and that they were like one single mechanism that works perfectly together.
