Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Are the Longest Married Presidential Couple, Celebrating 74 Years of Marriage

When it comes to work ethic, you won’t find many folks who have a stronger one than former Pres. Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn. Carter is 95 years old now and his wife is 92, but they still work every day on the projects that matter to them. Furthermore, they’ve broken their own record for being the longest married presidential couple in U.S. history. These two have been married for a whopping 74 years, longer than some of us even aspire to live. The record previously belonged to Pres. George H.S. Bush and Barbara Bush, who were married until the time of Mrs. Bush’s deathin 2018.

The Bushes were married for 73 years and 111 days at the time of the former first lady’s death. Last year, Pres. Carter said that his reason for living for so long and healthily is because of the love and support of his wife. In an interview with People, he said, “It’s hard to live until you’re 95 years old. I think the best explanation for that is to marry the best spouse: someone who will take care of you and engage and do things to challenge you and keep you alive and interested in life. One of the things Jesus taught was: If you have any talents, try to utilize them for the benefit of others,” said Carter, adding, “That’s what Rose and I have both tried to do.”

Jimmy and Rosalynn got married on July 7, 1946, and had their first child, Jack, a year later. Three more children followed Jack, including songs Jeff and Chip, and 14 years later, a daughter, Amy. The first lady was an influential force in the White House and was empowered by her husband. She said, “Jimmy has always thought I could do anything. Always. And so I’ve done everything,” adding that she has “done things I never dreamed I could do.”

When it comes to being outside the office, the two enjoy other fun activities, such as bird watching, downhill skiing (when they were younger), and tennis.

The couple has worked for years building homes for Habitat for Humanity. In 36 years, they have built more than 4,000 homes. Last year alone, the couple built 21 homes in the Nashville area, and they’re both in their 90s. One secret to their happiness is one an introvert like me can get behind. When they have a quiet moment, they enjoy staying home by themselves enjoying a quiet day at home without visitors or phone calls. I think they’ve definitely earned some peace and quiet.
