Many Americans start thinking about retirement as they begin approaching their 50s and 60s after completing decades of hard work. However, Earl Mallinger from Oslo, Minnesota, isn’t one of those folks. At 105, he’s long past the “retirement age” for social security, and he’s been farming since 1932 with no plans of slowing down or stopping anytime soon!
“I never quit farming because it is so much fun,” he said.

Within his lifetime, Mallinger has worked over 100 harvests. He’s currently growing sugarbeets, wheat, and soybeans on 1,000 acres. And he grew certified seed potatoes for over 50 years.
“I like the fresh air for one thing and I like to see the crops grow and see what God has done,” said Mallinger. “A fella has to have a lot of faith when you have a little seed and you get a crop like this.”

Mallinger’s dad moved their family to rural Oslo, where he built a house on a farm. Little did Earl know at the time how much this move would change his life.
“Dad took one look at me and said I was going to be a farmer,” he said with a laugh. “I’m glad he did that. I really enjoy farming and I always knew I wanted to be a farmer.”

During his career, Mallinger has seen a lot of new advancements in agricultural technology. He farmed using both modern farm equipment and horses and was there to witness the birth of the America Crystal Sugar Cooperative.
In 1993, Mallinger earned the North American Seed Potato Grower of the Year award.

And for anyone looking to know the secret of his success, Mallinger offers a few simple words of advice.
“If you didn’t inherit land from your parents, start small,” he said. “Work hard and don’t spend too much money and you’ll be successful. Remember that God is in control.
“You have got to have Him with you. Also, don’t forget to stop and smell the roses. I didn’t work much on Sundays and I still made a good living.”

Farming isn’t the only thing Mallinger still enjoys doing. He was also an active golfer until age 102 and now spends at least 5 days a week playing cards.
“Keep moving, once you, once you quit moving, you go downhill pretty fast,” he said.

When looking back on his life, Mallinger says he has no regrets. There were some ups and downs, but he says he managed to overcome them thanks to his faith.
“Be humble and with the help of God, you don’t have to worry,” he said.
“Don’t sweat the small stuff.”
